A Technical Summary

1946 - Dr. William Petersen proves a cow's udder can produce
antibodies to bacteria.
1951 - Concept of introducing antigens to cause a cow to produce
antibodies presented.
1955 - Petersen proves that antibodies can cross species.
1959 - US Patent #3,376,198. Method of producing targeted
colostrum.
1960 - Collins family takes over Petersen work and acquires
patent rights, produces products for the treatment of diseases in cows
without the use of antibiotics.
1979 - Dr. Stanley Olsztyn meets Mary and Bob Collins.
Begins to use targeted colostrum in treating human patients. Continues
to improve the process.
1983 - David Bergsma meets Olsztyn. Bergsma, a successful
CPA, is suffering from CFS and having to sell his CPA firm. Olsztyn
uses targeted colostrum to cure Bergsma and allow him to continue career.
1993 - Big news to Bergsma. Olsztyn says supply of targeted
colostrum to terminate. Bergsma can't accept. Joins forces with Olsztyn
to create a company to continue the availability of targeted colostrum,
which involves agreements with the Collins family business.
1994 - Biotic Code International, Inc. (BCI) is launched and
three products are developed.
1995 - Evidence of effectiveness from users is spectacular.
NK Cell activity changes noted. BCI learns of Dr. Stoff's work with
NK Cells.
1996 - Quantum Research replaces BCI. First clinical study
published.
1997 - Matol contacts Quantum looking for a product.
1998 - Biomune OSF™ Plus and EXPRESS, state-of-the-art products
launched. (Benefits of the original three BCI products were combined in
Biomune OSF™ Plus. Express is a unique development of a related but
different type) Matol Botanical has exclusive marketing rights to these
products.
Dr. William Peterson established, through research started in the 1940's, that it is possible to induce the formation of specific antibodies in colostrum milk by infusing antigens into the udder of a dairy cow approximately three weeks before giving birth to a calf.
Each antibody is formed in direct response to only one specific organism, which it attacks to neutralize or destroy. The colostrum produced will automatically transfer antibody protection to the calf for that specific organism.
When a collection of antigens is infused, the resulting colostrum is said to be "targeted" for that specific collection of organisms.
As new disease organisms are isolated, Quantum Research adds the corresponding antigens to the mix used to infuse the cows. This produces the broadest spectrum of protection encapsulated in Biomune OSF™ Plus.
Where Does Quantum
Research Get Colostrum?
It is the Collins' herd of dairy cows that supplies the colostrum for
Quantum Research to manufacture Matol's Biomune OSF™ Plus. They have
been raised organically and free of antibiotics since the 1950's.
They have also been bred to be the most effective producers of targeted
colostrum.
Biomune OSF™ Plus Contains No Colostrum!
Because Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus is a formula that includes a colostrum/whey extract it is often confused and compared with colostrum products. Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus contains no colostrum. It is an extract from colostrum and whey with the herb astragalus.
A carefully researched and developed mix of antigens is infused into the udders of a special herd of cows approximately three weeks before they give birth. Small protein molecules called "transfer factors" are produced. They are unique and would not have occurred without the infusion of the mix of antigens into the cows udders.
These small protein molecules can passively transfer immunity from one mammal to another by stimulating cell-mediated immunity (CMI).
The resulting colostrum milk is then filtered to retain only these transfer factor molecules. This is accomplished through a patented and proprietary process. The naturally occurring components of the colostrum are discarded.
How the Immune System Protects Us
Most interactions of the cell mediated immunological (CMI) response take place through the activity of the T-cell lymphocytes. As the clones of T-cells mature in the thymus (The "T" in T-Cell stands for thymus derived), they learn to recognize specific targets (antigens) for example a virus or bacterium.
The thymus pumps out T-cells by the tens of millions every day. Even though only a few of them may recognize any one antigen, the collective scouting force is vast enough to identify almost all of the nearly infinite variety of antigens that occur in nature.
To start this powerful CMI response the T-4 (helper) cells receive a signal (lymphokine) from little "Pac-man" like cells called macrophages that eat everything that they consider to be foreign to our system. The T-4 cells can also be directly stimulated to take action by interacting with the antigens. These helper cells are unarmed, but once stimulated they send urgent biochemical signals (lymphokines) to a special squadron of T-cells called the natural killer cells (NK).
Like all T-cells, NK cells are trained to recognize one specific enemy, such as a virally infected cell or a cancer cell. When called into action by the T-4 cells the sleeping squadron replicates into an army with a single-minded task. The NK cells are lethal. When they attach to a target cell, a biochemical cascade is triggered that punctures the cell membrane thus killing the hapless bacterium, virally infected cell or cancer cell. They are a critical line of defense and often our only line of defense in cases of HIV, EBV or CMV infection.
When the Immune System is Compromised
When disease causing organisms invade our body they can destroy the B cells (lymphocytes primarily responsible for acquired immunity) and deactivate the T-4 cells, making them incapable of sending their urgent biochemical signals (lymphokines) to the NK cells. Simply put, they break down the communication to the killer cells and render our defense system impotent! This is comparable to an invading army destroying the early warning radar and communications of the defending forces.
Biomune OSF™ Plus Restores Communication
The small protein molecules that were created in the cow's udder as a result of the infusion of antigens are in the Biomune OSF™ Plus. They perform the function of the "urgent biological signals" of the T-4 cells and tell the NK cells what to attack! They rally the NK cells into a counter attack to destroy the disease causing invaders. They bypass the communication that was compromised.
The "Plus" refers to the Astragalus herb in Biomune OSF™ Plus. Astragalus increases interferon production and enhances NK and T cell function, increasing resistance to viral conditions. Astragalus has also been shown to be a support for the body in peripheral vascular disease and peripheral circulation. Astragalus aids adrenal gland function, which often needs support in chronic and degenerative health conditions.
Astragalus is considered an immune stimulation herb. The "stem cells" in the bone marrow are increased and their development is stimulated into active immune cells that are then released into the body. Essentially, every phase of the immune system activity is stimulated by Astragalus.
Researchers in China have conducted recent studies that report that
Astragalus is an effective treatment for supporting the immune system in
cancer patients. Two separate studies followed patients receiving
traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which typically devastate
the immune system and leave the recipients weak and susceptible to new
opportunistic infections.
Patients receiving Astragalus extracts had twice the survival rate
of those only receiving standard therapies. Further studies in the
U.S. confirmed that Astragalus has unique immunity enhancement qualities.
How Matol Biomune ™ Plus Works
Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus is an immune system modulator. It regulates the immune system rather than stimulate or depress the function. If the immune system is overactive as in autoimmune diseases (lupus, arthritis, allergies, MS, etc.) it will be down-regulated and if it is underactive or depressed it will be up-regulated. It is safe in organ transplant patients, as the rejection mechanism is not affected by the mechanism of operation of the Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus.
Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus contains Quantum Research, Inc.'s colostrum/whey
extract. This "extract" is not a single extract of colostrum/whey
but combinations of synergistic components that support immune system modulation
that are created by special patented and proprietary processes.
Those components include:
Transfer factors -- these are small protein molecules that can passively transfer immunity from one mammal to another by stimulating cell mediated immunity. Specific transfer factors are created by a special patented process of immunological antigen stimulation. This is one of the reasons for the unique nature of the Quantum Research, Inc. colostrum/whey extract. The purified transfer factors can be given to people to passively stimulate B cell function and NK cell function. B cells are programmed to produce antibodies to specific antigens, and NK cells primarily attack virally infected cells and cancer cells.
Lactoferrin -- is an iron-binding protein that exerts an anti-microbial activity by withholding iron from ingested bacteria and fungi. It is a type of cytokine that acts as an intercellular mediator, generating an immune response that helps coordinate attacks on foreign invaders.
Lactose -- this naturally occurring disaccharide is a very important component of the colostrum/whey extract. In proportion it is very small by volume but a necessary factor for the absorption and transportation of the small molecular immunological proteins. It is in such low concentration that lactose intolerant people are not adversely affected but in sufficient quantities to act as a synergistic agent for the array of immunological and biological activities.
Other immunological factors -- There are other obscure but critical immunological components identified and unidentified that provide a synergistic relationship to create immunological responses that enhance immune function.
How to Use Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus
Preventative or Maintenance - Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus is a dietary supplement that is designed to provide immune system support so necessary in these times. We live in a stressful environment of air pollution, chemical pollution, noise pollution and societal pressures that include overwork, family demands, financial issues and career concerns.
These circumstances place a tremendous demand upon the body and mind that can overwork and overwhelm immune function. In order to prevent a decline in our health we must actively pursue ways and means to counteract the deleterious effect of the environment. Research has shown that low NK cell activity is related to the presence or potential development of illness and disease.
Research demonstrates that a valid strategy to maintain good health is to keep NK cell activity at the highest levels possible. There are a number of ways to increase NK cell activity, but Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus has proven to be a safe, economical and effective way to dramatically and consistently support the immune system through supporting increased NK cell activity. A maintenance intake of one to two capsules daily is recommended.
Acute conditions - When the immune system is under attack from acute infections and illness, it is advisable to aggressively support the body with nutrients and life style practices that enhance the immune system. Three to twelve of Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus capsules daily in divided portions is common usage during high immune system demand. As the body recovers the amount is gradually reduced until the symptoms are gone.
Chronic health problems - In chronic conditions there is usually a long-term history of the problem that requires continual management. One capsule of Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus three times per day is recommended for chronic immune challenge. In the more severe situations it is recommended that one initially take two capsules three times per day for one week then reduce the amount to one capsule three times daily thereafter.
Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus and Children - The product is safe for
all ages and only the amount given is varied in children according to their
age and size. If a child is too young to swallow a capsule, the powder
may be mixed into juice or food for consumption by the child. Older
children or adults who do not like to swallow capsules may empty the contents
of the capsule directly into their mouth
and swallow.

Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus and animals - The colostrum/whey extract process was researched using farm animals starting fifty years ago. Animals were the first to receive the benefits of the targeted colostrum/whey products produced from the technology that is now the basis for the Quantum Research, Inc. colostrum/whey extracts.
We have had numerous reports of people using the Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus with their pets with excellent results. The amount of product used depends upon the size of the animal, but with the same principles apply as with humans.
Contraindications - There is no known toxic level for Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus. However, any food has an adverse reaction if taken excessively. If the product causes digestive upset (very rare) or an allergic reaction to the astragalus (very uncommon) discontinue usage.
People who are allergic to dairy products are not affected by the Biomune OSF™ Plus colostrum/whey extract as the milk proteins that cause milk allergies are removed. Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus may be taken during chemotherapy, with antibiotics, and with other drug therapy. Discontinue the Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus if your doctor recommends that you do so.
The Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction is a well known immunological reaction that is the experience of unpleasant symptoms in reaction to the killing of harmful microorganism while at the same time recovering. This type of response is not common, but it does occur from time to time with certain people. There are occasional reports of this reaction from people taking Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus.
This reaction occurs in individuals who have dormant pathogenic microorganisms in their tissue or organs. When Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus is taken the immune system is activated and will attempt to eliminate these microbes. If the individual has dormant virus or bacteria in his or her body the immune response initiates a natural healing crisis that may lead to various symptoms associated with those particular organisms. The immune response may illicit cold and flu symptoms, skin rash, fever, lethargy and malaise.
The body has a natural response cycle that occurs in dealing with pathogenic microorganisms. Fever, expectoration, diarrhea etc. are signs and symptoms indicating that the body is handling the pathogenic intrusion in an effective and appropriate manner.
Dormant micro-organisms may reside in the body for long periods of time without consequence until there is sufficient physical or emotional stress for them to display their opportunistic characteristics in the form of acute, chronic or degenerative health problems. This is a rationale for people who suddenly succumb to a disease that appears suddenly for no apparent reason.
We would like to see everyone who takes Matol Biomune OSF™ Plus have a pleasant and immediate response. Most do. However, some people go through a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction or healing crisis before they experience the value of improved immune function.

Summary of the clinical study: The Use of Dialyzable Bovine Colostrum Extract in Conjunction with a Holistic Treatment Model for Natural Killer Cell Stimulation in Chronic Illness by Jesse A. Stoff, MD, MFHOM, FACLM.
The study consisted of 107 patients with an average treatment time of 13.2 months. The youngest participant was 17 years and the oldest was 83 years. The average initial NK cell activity was 18 Lytic Units and the average final NK cell activity was 246 Units. All patients in the study greatly improved, went into remission or recovered. Conclusions: The Study Group demonstrated that stimulation of NK activity paralleled restored resistance to illness and recovery from illness. Use: Dietary Supplement
Directions for Use: Take one capsule daily for maintenance and one or two capsules every 2-3 hours when additional immune support is needed. The product can be taken daily for maintenance or as above for extended periods of time. There is no known toxicity.
